Manager Spotlight: Raphael Adekunle

05 December 2024

The Manager Spotlight offers a small insight into the heads of incredible managers. This week in the spotlight is 2022 Accelerator Programme alum, Raphael Adekunle!

How long have you worked in Management?

5 years – started my management company RAXWAY in 2020.

Who do you manage now?

S1mba, 163Margs & SWiTCH.

Where did you find your first client and what inspired you to take them on?

Met S1mba at college at a time I didn’t know anything about music, I just found myself drawn to being in the music studio we had in our college to the point I used to skip lessons to be able to just vibe. I looked at S1mba as a friend and I seen the potential he had and wanted to help him reach it so I used my social media and my resources to help join the dots and push him to do more. I never chose to do management, everything just happened naturally and soon after S1mba dropped his first track the success came, now he’s a BRIT Nominated, Multi Platinum 900 million streaming artist/producer.

With 163Margs & SWiTCH I found them through social media and once again noticed the potential they had, and as I had a passion for developing artists and helping build careers, I reached out and brought them to my studio where we began working soon after. A year later, 163Margs has just been nominated for his first MOBO’s award with over 60 million streams in the past year! Big up my management partner Lenny Jnr for also inspiring me to try new things and step out my comfort zone with the artists in the roster.

What does a good/bad day at work look like for you?

One thing about artist management is you can’t allow yourself to have bad days, or at least allow something bad to define your day, as it knocks team morale and the whole reason we’re in the field is to manage situations and overcome them. A Good day is filled with productivity, whether that being meetings or sessions or even shows. The main aim of a good day is being busy, and thus if there’s nothing happening that day you’ve got to be the person to make things happen. If Lenny Jnr or one of my artists don’t call me during the day I guess it’s a bad day.

What has been the highlight of your management career to date?

My management company RAXWAY amassing over a billion streams across our roster. S1mba being nominated for ‘Song of the year’ for Rover at the BRITS 2021, aswell as charting and going double platinum in several countries. 163Margs being nominated for the MOBOS 2024 for best Drill Act and charting top 40 with Hide& Seek.

In this management game I appreciate the big wins aswell as the small wins, whether it’s a label deal or just a song release I’ve learnt you’ve got to appreciate the highs and the lows.

What do you think are the big challenges for a manager in 2024?

Adapting to the transition in the scene and maintaining the buzz/ hype their artists are creating. The games changed a lot in the few years I’ve been in it, however you’ve always got to be ahead or be able to predict what’s next. A few years ago we were used to releases every few months, now my artists are dropping monthly and focused on consistency, aswell as putting out a lot of content due to TikTok being the main platform now.

Also another challenge is not letting ego get in the way, as I’ve learnt this game is very full circle. A lot of people who didn’t want to show love/ connect with us early on now may realise it was the wrong approach to have, as there’s room for all of us to have success and help each other reach the top, as there’s not a lot of us in this position.

What did you gain from the Accelerator Programme?

I gained a sense of understanding and gained friendships and relationships within the industry. Big up Paul Bonham and the whole Accelerator team.

Why would you recommend the MMF?

They help you to think different, and to also put structure into what you’re doing. When I came into the game I was learning on the job as management went 0-100, so being able to speak to likeminded people with experience that are actually in the industry and who could help connect me with people really helped me so I’m sure it can help others.

What music are you currently listening to?

If it’s not my artists it’s Afrobeats. 163Margs, Young Jonn, Zinoleesky, Odeal, Jayo, S1MBA, Nemzz, Fimi Guerrero and a lot of the underground/ upcoming artists are who I stay locked in with.
